Breast Augmentation: Specifics

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure during which breast implants are inserted. You will choose the size and type: saline or silicone, during your consultation. Depending on your body structure and your desired outcome, Dr. Schlesinger will help you to choose the best breast implant for you. The type and size of implants you choose will also help him to determine the location for the incision he will make during the surgery and whether to put the implants over or under your chest muscles.

You will be given anesthesia so that you can "sleep" during the procedure. Dr. Schlesinger will make hidden incisions in areas determined during your consultation. The location of the incisions are very patient-specific: the incisions might be made in the armpits, or around the colored part (areola) surrounding your nipples. Dr. Schlesinger often uses endoscopy in connection with breast augmentation--an advanced technique that can produce greater accuracy, and less bruising and therefore quicker recovery.

The implants are inserted on your chest wall normally behind your chest muscle. Once the implants are in place, you will begin your recovery. Most breast augmentations only take 1 – 3 hours.

Breast Augmentation: After the Procedure

Buy new clothes before the procedure so that you can wear them when you get home. Since the results are immediate, you will no longer fit into the smaller cup sizes of your old bras and tops. Follow your doctor's recommendations for post-surgery care for yourself. You will likely be asked to avoid heavy lifting for up to two weeks afterward to allow your chest muscles to fully heal from the procedure.
