Breast Enhancement: Definition and Procedure

Breast enhancement is a general term that refers to two classes of procedures: augmentations and lifts. Breast enhancement can improve the look of your chest by lifting and adding volume. There are different procedures available depending upon your body type and expectations. Dr. Schlesinger will help you to determine if breast enhancement is the right choice for you and  which surgiical procedure would be appropriate. A popular choice is an augmentation in connection with a lift--which imparts a more youthful appearance to your body.

Breast Enhancement: Specifics

During your consultation, Dr. Schlesinger will discuss available implants and positioning as well as how you might have your breasts lifted if needed. Both types of breast enhancement -- implants and lifts -- are surgical procedures, for which you will be given sedative during the procedure so that you feel no discomfort.  Once you are in surgery, Dr. Schlesinger will make incisions to insert an implant or to reposition your nipples to accomplish a lift. Your implants will be placed on top of or beneath your chest muscles depending upon your body structure. If you are having a lift, extra skin and tissue will be removed in order to reshape your breasts, unless you are having an internal or dual plane mastopexy where skin and nipples are lifted with no external incisions. Ask Dr. Schlesinger if you might be a candidate for the scarless dual-plane internal mastoplexy with implants. Depending upon the procedure you choose, your breast enhancement surgery could last between 1 – 3 hours.

Breast Enhancement: What to Expect

Since it is a surgical procedure, you should carefully weigh the risks and benefits of breast enhancement. You should have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery. The results of your breast enhancement will be seen immediately following the surgery. As with nearly any surgical procedure, you will experience some swelling; this condition will subside in about a week (depending on your physiology).

Remember that a lift will not resize your breasts, a breast lift reshapes breasts. Breast lifts are especially effective with breasts that sag naturally after childbirth or from aging. Only through an actual augmentation will you increase your breast size.
