Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Otoplasty, or ear surgery/ear pinning, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that changes the appearance of a person's ears. Ear surgery can bring ears closer to the head (often called ear pinning) or can reduce the size of very large ears, and can even reshape various bends in the cartilage. The use of Otoplasty surgery was first reported historically in ancient India around 600 BC by Sushruta, a physician often called the "father of surgery."
Ear surgery can produce dramatic improvements in the appearance of your ears in just a few short hours.
About Ear Surgery
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia. The overwhelming number of otoplasties can be performed as an outpatient procedure, but in rare cases ear surgery may require a hospital stay. You'll discuss your needs with Dr. Schlesinger during your consultation.
Because of the variety of conditions that ear surgery aims to correct (i.e., pinning or size reduction) the surgical procedure will differ. The human ear is composed of a thin structural cartilage surrounded by skin. Generally, ear surgery involves a reshaping of the underlying cartilage, although reshaping of the skin on the ear is often undertaken during otoplasty.
Ear Surgery: What to Expect
Ear surgery is a surgical procedure and as such, you will require some time to recover. You will likely be fitted with a bandage over your ear(s). Be sure to follow Dr. Schlesinger's instructions regarding the removal of the bandages. After a short healing period, your results will be immediate and permanent.
