Liposuction

I performed the first liposuction in Hawaii in 1983, and I’ve performed more than 7,000 liposuction procedures since then. If you are bothered by excess fat in certain body areas, you may be interested in undergoing liposuction at Oahu Plastic Surgery Center as my patient. Please read on to learn more about liposuction.

About Liposuction

Liposuction (“lipo” means fat) is a common cosmetic procedure that suctions fat deposits in specific areas of the body. It is not a “weight loss surgery,” but rather a body contouring procedure that is designed to sculpt, tone and add definition to specific body areas.

The liposuction procedure begins with general anesthesia, and then uses a narrow stainless steel tube, called a cannula, that is inserted through a small incision to remove unwanted fat through a suction pump. Following the procedure, the result is an improved contour in that specific body area.

Some of the most popular body areas for liposuction include the:

  • Abdomen
  • Chin
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms

However, other sites for potential fat removal are possible. The best way to determine if I can help you contour the areas of the body you would like to target is by meeting with me for an initial consultation.

Traditional Liposuction vs. Liposuction “Systems”

The traditional liposuction procedure, which involves a tumescent injection to increase patient comfort and decrease bleeding followed by skillful, manual suctioning, is my preferred technique for patients undergoing liposuction in Hawaii. One American Society of Plastic Surgeons study found that 90% of surgeons perform traditional liposuction and only 10% utilize the various laser liposuction “systems” (SmartLipo, SlimLipo, etc.). Usually, that 10% uses a system because of its marketing benefits – not its benefits to the patient. Laser liposuction systems are no better for patients, and sometimes they are even worse. They can lead to more bumpiness and waviness, and they aren’t always able to provide the results that patients want. By contrast, traditional tumescent liposuction can create smoother, more precise results that satisfy a patient’s goals.
