Possible Complications with Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Like any cosmetic surgery in Hawaii, complications are possible following tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Honolulu plastic surgeon Dr. Schlesinger uses techniques to minimize the risk of complications whenever possible. The most common complication is a collection of blood or serum (seromas) under the skin of the abdomen, a condition known as hematoma. A suction drain is placed inside during your tummy tuck in Hawaii and will remain for three days until you return to Dr. Schlesinger's cosmetic surgery offices in Hawaii for painless removal of the drain.

Infection and incision healing problems, including loss of skin and excessive scarring, occurs less frequently. As with any surgical procedure in Maui, Kona or Honolulu, abdominoplasty may result in small nerves underneath the skin being interrupted. Portions of your abdomen will feel numb or have less feeling. Sensation returns over several months but some diminished feeling may last indefinitely.

Following tummy tuck in Hawaii, you can expect a horizontal scar low on the abdomen and a circular scar within the belly button (umbilicus). Limited or mini-abdominoplasty does not require a scar around the umbilicus. In some individuals, a different type or location of scar may be necessary because of particular body variations. Your Honolulu plastic surgeon will inform you during your consultation of the exact scar placement he expects. Scars will be red or pink for six months and gradually fade thereafter. Most Hawaii abdominoplasty patients are not troubled by the scars, but keep in mind that all scars are permanent and their height, width and final color are not totally predictable.

Like any surgical procedure, other serious or even life threatening complications are possible following tummy tuck in Hawaii. It is important to enter into your procedure aware not only of the benefits, but also of the possible complications. Talk with your surgeon about every question and concern you may have.

If you want to learn more about tummy tuck complications or you are worried about a particular risk, request a Free Abdominoplasty Consultation with Honolulu plastic surgeon Dr. S. Larry Schlesinger at his offices in Honolulu, Maui and Kona.
